What Part Do I Need If the Keypad Does Not Work on My LG Microwave?

LG microwaves are designed for installation in your home kitchen. After regular use of the microwave, it is not uncommon for components, such as the keypad or control board, to fail. When a component fails, ordering and installing the part yourself saves you money.
  1. Safety Precautions

    • Before performing any repairs on your microwave, be sure to disconnect the microwave's power source by either unplugging the microwave or turning off the microwave's breaker in your home's service panel. Some components in the microwave retain an electrical charge even after the microwave is disconnected from the power source. Although these components are not located near the control panel, do not attempt to repair your microwave if you are not comfortable repairing appliances.

    Component Required

    • The microwave's keypad is located on the right side of the front of the appliance and contains both the control board and then user input buttons. If the keypad fails, you must replace the entire control assembly, as this is usually indicative of a control board failure.

    Model Number

    • To ensure that the proper component for your specific microwave is ordered, locate the microwave's model number. The model number is most often located on a sticker on the door jamb. Once the model number is known, visit one of the many appliance replacement parts retailers and enter the model number of your microwave. The search results will display the replacement components that are designed to work with your specific microwave.

    Installing the New Control Assembly

    • The control assembly is secured to the microwave using a single screw. To access the screw, remove the two screws on the top of the microwave that secure the top grille to the front of the microwave. With the grille removed, remove the Phillips-style screw from the top of the control assembly and then lean the assembly forward. Disconnect the wire connectors from the rear of the control assembly, and then remove the assembly from the microwave. To install the new control assembly, reverse the steps taken to remove the old one.
