What Are Fiberglass Bed Covers?

Fiberglass truck bed covers, also known as tonneau covers, provide protection for the beds of pickup trucks. It prevents items in the truck bed from falling out while moving or being stolen while the truck is parked. Because it is flush with the top of the truck bed, it does not change the vehicle's profile as a truck cap does.
  1. Fiberglass Bed Covers

    • Although fiberglass truck bed covers are not the only type available, they remain the most common. These weather-tight covers are less expensive than aluminum covers and more secure than soft material covers. You can paint your fiberglass covers to match the color of your truck or have designs put on it for style. In addition to protection, fiberglass truck bed covers offer the opportunity to personalize your vehicle's appearance.

    Advantages

    • Leer, one of the leading distributors of fiberglass truck bed covers, describes it as a "large, lockable storage space." This hard lid keeps water, leaves, snow, dirt and rodents out of the pickup's bed by sealing it from the elements. Store your valuables safely inside it when camping, hunting or just going to the store. These covers add value to the vehicle when it comes time to sell it.

    New or Used

    • When you buy a fiberglass truck bed cover from the manufacturer, you'll receive a warranty. However, you can save money by purchasing a used cover. If going that route, make sure the cover is not missing any of the parts necessary for installation, such as screws, bolts and hinges. Ensure that the sliding rails open and close correctly. Check that the fiberglass is not damaged.

    Maintenance

    • After installation, check the clamps for tightness after driving with the cover in place for about a week. If they remain tight, check them semi-annually. Keep the track level and sliding windows clean and free of dirt and debris. Use a dry silicone in the track to keep it functioning easily. Any levers or push buttons should be lubricated two or three times a year with a lithium grease or similar material. Do not wash or wax the cover for at least three months after installation. Once the three-month period elapses, you may clean it with a mild automotive soap and use a paste wax designed for motor vehicles. If the surface oxidizes and requires deep cleaning, use fiberglass restoration products.
