What Is an LP Regulator for a Grill?

Process

• Propane flows from the tank to the LP regulator. A knob or release valve starts the transfer. The LP regulator determines how much gas should pass through to the grill. The regulator allows more gas to flow if you set the grill for a high temperature setting, and less if you select a low temperature.

Safety

• Propane and gas grills are safe to use when operated properly. However, accidents can occur if connections are not proper or hoses attached to the LP regulator have leaks. A TV station in Corpus Christi, Texas, reported in October 2011 that a man escaped injury when his propane tank exploded. The man reported a hissing sound just before the explosion, which heavily damaged his house and caused damage next door.

Causes

• Propane gas is under pressure as it passes from the tank to the regulator and then to the grill. A fire or explosion is possible if gas escapes and a heat source is nearby, such as a person smoking a cigarette.

Prevention

• A spray bottle filled with water and dish detergent allows you to check for leaks in the LP regulator and attached hoses. Conduct the test with the grill cold and the LP regulator attached to the propane tank. Activate the release valve on the tank with temperature settings on the grill turned to the off position. Spray soapy water over all hoses and the LP regulator. The presence of bubbles is evidence of leak. If you see bubbles, discontinue use of the grill and contact a technician for possible replacement of the regulator and hoses.

• Registration of your gas grill is also important. Read your service manual for information about registration. Providing the grill’s manufacturer with your email or street address will allow you to receive important updates, such as recall information or additional information on safety.
