How to Install Exterior Binding Posts

A binding post is a type of speaker wire connector favored in many high-performance speaker cabinets. Binding posts can typically accommodate heavier gauge speaker wire than other types of connectors, allowing better signal transfer from the amplifier to the speaker. If you're building a speaker cabinet, installing binding posts will help the overall performance of the speaker system.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the nuts on the back sides of the binding posts. The post consists of the binding post side, installed on the outside of the cabinet, and a portion that goes inside the cabinet, to which the speaker's internal wiring connects. The nut you've removed keeps the post in place on the cabinet once it's installed.

    • 2

Make two pencil marks on the back of the cabinet, 1 inch apart, marking the location where you'll mount the binding post. Center the marks side to side on the cabinet, and about 12 inches up from the bottom of the cabinet.

    • 3

Drill holes at the marked locations. Each hole should be the same size as the body of the binding post.

    • 4

Insert the binding posts into the holes. Place the red post on the right and the black on the left. Place the nuts on the binding posts from the inside of the cabinet and tighten them with a small open-end wrench.
