Rattling Noise From the Burners on a Bryant Two-Stage Furnace

Bryant two-stage gas furnaces offer up to 80 percent annual fuel utilization efficiency and a 10-year parts and 20-year heat exchanger limited warranty. The furnace features a two-speed blower motor, a heat capacity of 66,000 to 154,000 BTU per hour and a primary thermostat. Although the furnace is designed to operate with little user input, problems that arise, such as rattling burners, may require some inspection and action to resolve.
  1. Vent System

    • One of the primary reasons that the burners on a Bryant furnace may make noise, during use, is improper firing caused by dirt or debris. You can examine the burners by disconnecting the furnace from its power source and allowing the unit to cool down. Then remove the access door on the front of the furnace and locate the gas burner, which looks like a set of tubes with a hole in the middle. Contact Bryant or another furnace service professional for cleaning and assistance. Do not try to clean the burners yourself.

    Airflow

    • Noisy burners can also be caused by obstructed airflow into or out of the furnace. Check the air registers for obstructions and keep all vents and registers clear. Inspect the vents on the furnace and clean the furnace exterior with a clean, dry cloth.

    Heat Exchanger

    • The heat exchanger may also be to blame for a rattling furnace burner. This noise usually happens once the furnace has turned on but about 30 seconds before the blower fan starts to run. Since a broken heat exchanger can emit dangerous fumes, turn off the furnace and contact emergency services if you suspect this is the problem. In addition, always keep a carbon monoxide detector plugged in and working in your home if you have a gas furnace.

    Air Filter

    • A dirty furnace air filter can impact the entire heating system because the filter affects the airflow through the unit. Disconnect power from the furnace first then open the access door and remove the air filter. If the filter is 1-inch thick, replace the filter with a new filter. Two-inch or more filters should be replaced every other month. If the filter in your Bryant furnace is a permanent type -- which will be marked on the side -- you can wash it with soapy water. Rinse the filter thoroughly and let it air-dry before putting it back into the furnace, closing the access panel firmly and restoring power to the unit.
