Lennox Brass Flame Installation

Fireplaces can provide a classy touch to any home. They add both warmth and aesthetic appeal to a room. Some of Norman Rockwell’s paintings showed American families gathered around a hearth, conveying a warmth of feeling as well as temperature. Lennox hearths offer the visual appeal of a fireplace without the need to keep a wood supply on hand, since they are gas-powered.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the framing components from the shipping materials. Assemble the appliance’s framing as directed in your specific product's installation manual. Slide the flame-generating appliance into this frame, and position the hearth as desired.

    • 2

Locate your home's natural gas shutoff valve. Turn the valve clockwise until the handle is perpendicular to the pipe, to stop the natural gas supply.

    • 3

Locate the nearest gas line on the appliance's left side. Measure this length with measuring tape, and use this measurement to locate two smaller black iron pipes and a T-joint that, when combined, will match the length.

    • 4

Cut the pipe with a hacksaw. Place the wrench against the pipe, and turn the section counterclockwise to whatever coupler or joint connects it to the line. This will remove the first cut pipe. Repeat this step to remove the second cut pipe section.

    • 5

Smear pipe compound on all the threads on the black iron pipes. Place one pipe against the supply line's coupler, and twist clockwise to tighten this connection. Tighten further with a wrench. Repeat this step with another pipe, to replace the second half of the cut pipe.

    • 6

Place the T-joint between these two pipes. Position the T-joint's left-facing coupler against the supply pipes, and turn its coupler clockwise until tight. Use a wrench to tighten the coupler connection further. Repeat this step with the T-joint's right-facing coupler and the second half of the supply pipe. The original supply pipe has now been replaced.

    • 7

Smear pipe compound on the threads of a third 1/2-inch diameter black iron pipe. Press the pipe's threads into the unused opening on the T-joint. Turn the pipe to tighten, and then use a wrench to tighten it further. This has routed the gas through a secondary pipe. Use couplers and pipe extensions as necessary to extend this supply to the gas feed on the appliance's left side. Do not attach the supply to the appliance yet.

    • 8

Remove the screws holding the cover plate to the appliance’s rear or top vent collar. Slide the vent line onto the appliance's vent collar. Seal this connection with four set screws. Many codes specify fireplaces must vent through a dedicated line to the outdoors. Wire the appliance’s control switch to the home power supply, as detailed in the specific model’s installation instructions.

    • 9

Smear pipe compound on the threads of both couplers on the shutoff valve. Position one coupler against the route line pipe's threads. Turn the coupler clockwise to tighten. Place a wrench on the coupler and tighten further.

    • 10

Smear pipe compound on the threads of the appliance's gas flex line. Fit the gas flex line's threaded end into the shutoff valve's unused coupler. Turn the coupler clockwise to tighten. Place a wrench on the coupler and tighten further. Allow the compound to dry.

    • 11

Reactivate the gas supply. Twist all shutoff valve levers until they are parallel to the line. Spray leak detection solution on all connections. The solution will make large bubbles if there are gas leaks. Ensure there are no gas smells coming from the gas line additions or anything that might have been disturbed by work. If there are any signs of gas leaks, turn off the gas immediately. Remove the leaking parts, apply more pipe compound and repeat.

    • 12

Install the appliance's decorative features as shown in the specific unit’s instruction manual. These can include logs, lava stones or other aesthetic accessories. Slide the glass door mounting rods into the appliance’s brackets. Ensure the doors open and close in a smooth fashion.

    • 13

Turn on the appliance and verify the appliance is operating as it should. Adjust the burner to control the flame appearance. Install the hoods, as indicated in the manual.
