Tip the mixer upside down onto a towel so the pedestal is facing up. Look inside the bottom of the mixer to locate the hinge mechanism. Spray a little penetrating oil into the hinge, turn the mixer back up the correct way and raise and lower the motor a few times. Penetrating oil helps loosen the hinge if it is stuck or difficult to operate.
Turn the mixer upside down again, and remove the setscrew from the hinge. Use a hammer and punch to knock out the hinge pin and separate the pedestal from the top of the mixer. Inspect the hinge pin for signs of wear through lack of lubrication. Push a new pin into position and replace the setscrew.
Tip the mixer head backward with the appliance upright. Check whether the screw on the inside of the hinge feels tight. This screw adjusts the position of the mixing blades in the bowel. Replace the screw if it feels loose in its nylon insert.
