How to Start an Oil-Fired Burner

Oil-fired burners are designed to be user-friendly. Although these appliances are large and powerful heat sources, their heating mechanism is relatively straightforward. Oil is supplied through the oil lines and delivered to the burner as a fuel source. Starting the burner for the first time may seem like an intimidating task, but if the appliance is sound, inspected and in working order you'll have things warmed up in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the thermostat to its lowest setting.

    • 2

Turn off the power that feeds the burner. If the burner has a main service switch located on its front, you may shut the power off there. If not, turn off the circuit breaker or fuse that controls the oil fired burner.

    • 3

Turn the oil shutoff valve to the "on" position. In most models, the oil shutoff valve is located on the oil supply pipe directly adjacent to the oil tank.

    • 4

Turn the burner's power back on.

    • 5

Set the thermostat to the desired temperature.
