How to Connect a Downdraft Stove

When you install and connect a downdraft stove, it eliminates the need for a range hood. When turned on, the ventilation system pulls the steam and smoke created down into it with a fan. These types of stoves are suitable for installation against a wall or on an island, as long as nothing is in the way of the ventilation system. Check the local building code for electrical wiring to make sure that your installation complies with the rules in your area.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker for the kitchen power supply.

    • 2

Measure the countertop for the dimensions you need to cut, using a tape measure. Mark the measurements using a pencil. Drill a starter hole in the countertop to allow insertion of the jigsaw blade.

    • 3

Insert the blade of the jigsaw in the starter hole. Cut away the material to make the opening for the downdraft stove. Check the level of the countertop, using the builder’s level. If the countertop is not level, place shims under it as necessary to make it level. The shims must go between the countertop and the cabinet base.

    • 4

Install the downdraft stove in the opening. Tighten the fasteners on the bottom side of the countertop to secure the stove. Drill holes on the side of the downdraft stove as needed to install the control panel, using a drill and a drill bit.

    • 5

Tighten the thumbscrews on the control panel to secure it in place. Connect the electrical wires to the downdraft stove. Red or black wires are hot, and the white or gray wire is neutral. The ground connection will always be a green or a bare wire. Install wire nuts on the wire splices after you connect them according to color.

    • 6

Seal the edges of the downdraft stove, using the caulk and caulking gun. This will prevent any spilled liquids from getting into the control panel or under the downdraft stove. Connect the vent on the stove to the exhaust vent and tighten the clamp with a Phillips screwdriver. Turn the kitchen circuit breaker on.
