How to Replace Zone Valves in Baseboard Heaters

Zone valves are a component of water-based baseboard heaters. The valve opens to allow heated water to circulate through the water lines, which heats the water fins when air temperature has dropped below the thermostat setting. If your baseboard heater doesn't heat up when the thermostat temperature is low, or if the unit completely fails, then you should replace the zone valve. A new zone valve can be ordered from the baseboard manufacturer or from an online retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply in your home from your home's main shut-off valve.

    • 2

Turn off the electrical power to your baseboard heater from your home's main circuit breaker.

    • 3

Remove the front panel from the baseboard heater. On some models you can unsnap the panel by lifting from the bottom; on other models you must remove the screws holding the front panel in place by using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 4

Disconnect the water line on the side of the baseboard heater by pulling it off the zone valve with your hand.

    • 5

Connect an adjustable wrench to the zone valve, which is the metal valve at the side end of the baseboard heater.

    • 6

Turn the wrench counter-clockwise, then pull the zone valve out from the heater.

    • 7

Disconnect the two wire connectors from the heater's terminal, then pull the zone valve all the way out from the heater. The wire connectors remain attached to the zone valve.

    • 8

Connect the wire connectors of the new zone valve to the heater's terminal, then fasten in the new zone valve part by turning clockwise with your wrench.

    • 9

Reconnect the water line to the zone valve using needle-nose pliers to make sure the water line is completely connected to the valve.

    • 10

Re-attach the front panel to the baseboard heater, and re-insert the front panel screws, if necessary. Turn the electrical power back on from the circuit breaker.

    • 11

Turn the hot water supply back on in your home from your water supply shut-off valve.
