How to Remove & Reset a GE Cooktop Stove

GE makes a variety of cooktop stoves, also known as ranges, to replace your old GE cooktop. These stoves look built into the cabinetry and do in fact drop into place. There are differences to removing and installing electric and gas cooktops. While a handy homeowner can install an electrical cooktop, gas cooktops should be professionally installed. Removal and installation of an electrical cooktop will take one to two days, depending on your skill level. Your new cooktop may use less electricity than your old one, as well as help to give the kitchen an updated look.

Instructions

  1. Remove the Old Unit

    • 1

Turn off the power to the stove. Usually stoves are on a dedicated circuit and have their own breaker switch.

    • 2

Remove the oven door. Open the door to the oven all the way. Using a flat head screwdriver, push the hinge locks toward the door and away from the oven. Hold the door with one hand on each side of the door. Lift the door up as if closing it until it is almost fully closed. Slide the door off the hinges by lifting up on it. Set it to the side.

    • 3

Lift the oven up and bring it out of the cabinet area. It is still attached to the wall by wires at this point. With the stove on the floor in front of the opening, disconnect the wires from the stove to the wall. Often wires are secured with wire nuts and just need to be unscrewed to separate the wires.

    • 4

Clean the area where the stove was. Over time, grime can build up and this is your best opportunity to get rid of it. Move the old stove out of the way and bring the new one into the kitchen.

    Install the New Stove

    • 5

Remove the oven door in the same manner you removed the old door. Set the door to the side in an area where it will not get damaged.

    • 6

Attach the new wiring. Trim the exposed end of the old wire. Strip off about an inch of insulation, revealing a new tip. Twist the old wires to the new ones and secure with a wire nut. Black connects to black, red to red, white to white and the ground wire attaches to a screw in the junction box itself.

    • 7

Lift the new stove into place. Make sure to set the stove onto the stop screws. There are notches on both the top and the bottom at the front of the stove that set onto the stop screws.

    • 8

Replace the oven door. Slide the door hinge lock up so it is in the locked position. Turn the power to the circuit back on. Test the oven and all the cooktop heating elements.
