How to Adjust the Garage Door After a Manual Adjustment on a Genie Pro Max

Manually adjusting the spring tension of your garage door sometimes has an adverse affect on your automatic garage door opener. Like many other openers, Genie Pro Max units have limit settings that tell the motor how hard to pull or push to open and close the door safely. With fresh hardware in place, you might find the Pro Max opens too fast or too slow. Adjusting the opener after manually adjusting the door is a relatively quick task.

Things You'll Need

  • Step ladder
  • Slotted screwdriver or coin
  • 1 1/2-inch piece of wood

Instructions

    • 1

Close the garage door. Stand on a step ladder beneath the main motor unit attached to the ceiling of the garage. You must be able to reach a set of buttons on the side of the Pro Max.

    • 2

Hold the "Open" limit switch button until the door reaches its fully opened position, then release it immediately. Hold the "Close" limit switch button until the door makes contact with the ground and quickly release. These actions will configure the limit settings.

    • 3

Press the wall-mounted open button to raise the door and climb back up the ladder. Below the "Open" and "Close Limit" buttons are the "Open" and "Close Force" dials. Turn the "Open" force dial counterclockwise as far as it will go with a screwdriver or coin and try to open the door. If the door fails to reach the top, close it and turn the dial a little clockwise. Repeat until the door opens fully. Ideally, the door should be set to use the minimum amount of force possible to open the door.

    • 4

Repeat the process using the "Close Force" dial with the door open to find the correct amount of force to seal the garage. The garage door should open and close smoothly with the least amount of force possible.

Open the door and place a 1 1/2-inch thick piece of wood under the door. Close the door and observe how the unit reacts when it touches the piece of wood. The door must reverse when it touches the obstruction. Tweak the close force dial to use less force until the door reverses upon contact with the wood.
