How to Connect a Single-Walled Stovepipe

Once your wood stove is in place the proper dimension from the wall, it’s time to connect the single-walled stovepipe to the flue collar on the stove and the chimney box already installed in the ceiling. While not an arduous task, it does involve climbing up and down a ladder until the stovepipe is within reach. Depending on the length of the connection, it will take approximately 15 minutes per pipe section to connect the stovepipes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the pipe sections in the order that you plan to install them on the floor next to the wood stove. Note that each pipe section has a male end and a female end. The male end has a ridge that stops it from inserting any further into the pipe above it. Each pipe has about 3 inches on the end for insertion of a pipe if male, or acceptance of a pipe if female. Stovepipes install into the pipe above it, except for the first installation, which goes into the chimney box.

    • 2

Climb the ladder with the first pipe section, or have someone hand you the pipe section. Insert it into the chimney box above. Depending upon the type of box, it may accept the male or female end of the stovepipe. Insert the appropriate end and slightly twist until the pipe fully sits against the chimney box.

    • 3

Screw in the first screw through the exterior of the stovepipe so that it connects the stovepipe to the chimney box, using the drill. Apply light pressure until the screw penetrates the stovepipe. Verify that it connects the stovepipe to the chimney box. Insert two more screws, spaced around the circumference of the stovepipe in equal distances from each other. If the stovepipe is 6 inches in diameter, for instance, the circumference of the circle is equal to almost 19 inches, so place a screw every 6 1/4 inches.

    • 4

Insert the next stovepipe into the stovepipe just installed. Hold the stovepipe on either side and twist it gently as you push up on it. When it is fully seated to the lip, insert the screws as completed in Step 3.

    • 5

Repeat this procedure, inserting the stovepipe into the pipe above and securing with screws until all pipes connect to the wood stove. The last pipe secures through the holes in the flue collar on the stove.

Cover each screw head with high-temperature paint the color of the stovepipe to disguise them.
