How Close Can an Over-the-Range Microwave Be to the Range Top?

Hanging your microwave on the wall right under your cabinet and above your cook top will help save counter space and enable you to vent the stove. An over-the-range microwave’s installation manual will list the specific placement requirements. These will help vent the area, prevent home fires and ensure the microwave works efficiently.
  1. Space Between the Cook Top and the Top of the Microwave

    • Most microwave ovens require at least 30 inches between the top of the cook top and the top of the microwave oven. This allows you to place a tall pot on the stove while still having enough room for the microwave to vent. The space between the top of the microwave and the top of the cook top can be greater than 30 inches if you desire.

Space Between the Oven Top and the Bottom of the Microwave

    • To prevent fire hazards, you should leave enough space between the microwave appliance and the top of the oven. Some over-the-top microwaves require at least 2 inches between the top of the oven’s back control panel and the bottom of the microwave. This number will vary however, depending on how high your back control panel is.

Space Between the Top of the Microwave and the Floor

    • Microwaves need to be a certain height from the floor. This specific measurement will vary depending on your microwave make and model. Some microwaves require at least 66 inches between the top of the microwave and the floor. Place the microwave at a convenient height so you don’t need to lift hot food above your head.

    Filling Gaps

    • Following precise installation requirements might leave gaps between your microwave and your cabinets. You can fill these gaps in several ways. Patch kits are small planks of cabinetry that will match your current cabinets but serve no purpose other than disguising a hole. Other fillers are made of metal or plastic and match your microwave. You can also place microwave vents around your microwave so you don’t need to vent the microwave outside your home or vent through the cabinets.
