How Does a Gas Cooktop With Downdraft Venting Work?

Downdraft Ventilation

• The downdraft ventilation system is designed to pull fumes, smoke and odor from the cooktop. Some downdraft systems lift up from the back of the gas range when in use, and other systems are flat and located on the cooktop surface. The smoke or fumes are pulled through a grease filter, and the unit sends the vented air through the ductwork to an outside vent.

Operating the Downdraft System

• Downdraft systems that rise up from the back of the gas range usually have a button that is pressed to lift up and activate the vent. Other downdraft systems can be turned on using a power switch or control knob that can be set to various fan speeds. Some models automatically activate the fan whenever the gas supply is turned on and the range is in operation.

Downdraft Range Sizes

• Downdraft gas ranges typically range between 30 and 36 inches in size. The vent runs the width or length of the gas range. The blower and motor are typically installed below the downdraft gas range in the cabinets but can also be installed farther away from the range to decrease sound when the ventilation system is in use.

Cleaning the Filter

• The filter on a downdraft gas range should be cleaned on a regular basis to help ensure proper filtration of the odors, smoke or fumes. Push the button to raise the ventilation system or lift the vent grille up and off the cooktop surface. Lift the corners of the filter and pull the filter out of the unit and then wash the filter in warm, soapy water. Rinse well with water and dry with a towel and then replace the filter in the ventilation system. Some filters can be washed in the dishwasher. Check your user manual for more information.
