How to Convert Gas Lamps From Natural to Propane

Gas lamps can be powered by either natural gas or propane, also known as liquid petroleum (LP). They work without the use of electricity so they are helpful in times of power outages. If you have natural gas lamps, you can switch them over to propane-powered lamps with little work. The main difference between natural gas and propane is the pressure. Because propane is a high-pressure gas, the openings on your gas lamps need to be smaller than with natural gas.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your gas lamps from the gas source and make sure the propane tank is turned off.

    • 2

Unscrew the gas line to the lamps from the natural gas regulator and screw it into the propane regulator with the wrench.

    • 3

Use the screwdriver to open the gas lamps. Locate the burner orifice on the inside of the gas lamp. Screw the propane burner orifice over the natural gas orifice with the wrench, if the natural gas orifice is not removable. If the natural gas orifice is removable, unscrew it from the burner with the wrench and screw the propane orifice in its place. If the natural gas orifice is removable it will unscrew from the burner.

Close the gas lamps with the screwdriver. Turn on the propane gas.
