A Locked Light Not Working on a Tappan Range

Many Tappan brand ranges have an electronic display panel with indicator lights for various cooking features and operational functions, such as when the oven is locked for cleaning or when temperatures are high. If the lock indicator light is not working, however, some troubleshooting can often help fix the problem.
  1. Power Supply

    • Determine whether anything on the range appears to be operational. If nothing on the display is illuminated, such as the clock or timer, there may have been a power failure. Find the Tappan range power cord, if available, and make sure the cord is plugged in. Some units may be slide-in models that are surrounded on both sides by counters or other appliances, which means the power cord is not accessible. In this instance, reset the circuit breaker or replace the household fuse to restore power.

    Self-Cleaning

    • To program the Tappan range for a self-cleaning function, touch the “Clean” key pad and the up or down arrows on the control panel to increase or decrease the overall cleaning time. Once the cleaning time is set, the oven door should lock automatically and the Lock light should illuminate. If the oven door does not lock and the Lock light does not illuminate, press “Clear/Off” and wait for the oven to cool completely. Reprogram the self-cleaning function. The oven will not commence with locking or cleaning if the oven temperature is still raised from a previous cooking function.

    Oven Temperature

    • If the Lock light was illuminated because the self-cleaning feature was running and the light has since turned off, the self-cleaning function is probably complete and the oven has cooled enough to access. The oven usually takes about an hour to cool once the cleaning is complete, and the light will go out automatically when the inner temperature has dropped to safe levels.

    Reset

    • Sometimes the Lock light will not work even if the oven is cool and the self-cleaning function is programmed correctly. If this occurs, disconnect power to the oven and wait 30 seconds before reconnecting the Tappan range power and trying again. Contact a professional for service if the Lock light continues to malfunction.
