How to Troubleshoot the Hot Surface Ignitor of a Gas Furnace

A hot surface ignitor is a small metal component in your furnace located next to the burners. The metal surface of the ignitor heats up to the point that it lights the burners, allowing your furnace to function. Eventually, it is possible to experience problems with the ignitor. In these instances, you can open up your furnace and inspect the ignitor to diagnose the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the power supply to your gas furnace. You can do this via the furnace's main controls or by flipping the correct circuit breaker to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the front access panel of the furnace and remove the panel. Notice the ignitor mounted near the burners. It is a metal rod attached to a ceramic base.

    • 3

Inspect the ignitor. Check the ceramic base for signs of cracks or damage. If the base is cracked, the ignitor will need replacing.

    • 4

Check the wiring running from the base of the ignitor. If it isn't securely plugged into the port, unplug and plug back in, making sure it is secure.

    • 5

Check the metal rod end of the ignitor. If there is dirt and grime caked on the metal rod, it could be the reason the ignitor is not functioning properly. Clean the metal rod with steel wool. If the rod is cracked, it will need replacing.

    • 6

Unplug the ignitor wiring harness and remove the screw holding the ignitor in place.

    • 7

Fit a new ignitor in the furnace and replace the screw and wiring.

    • 8

Replace the front panel of the furnace.
