How to Replace a Coil Cooktop With a Ceramic Top

A coil cooktop uses electric coils for heating elements on the appliance surface, while a ceramic top holds the coils below the surface for easier cleanup and a smooth appearance. Replacing a coil cooktop with a ceramic unit involves uninstalling the old unit and hooking up the new model. The below-counter connections are the same. Wear work gloves when raising or lowering cooktops to protect your hands from the rough metal edges on the underside.

Things You'll Need

  • Nut driver set
  • Putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the cooktop power cord where it connects to the outlet underneath the counter or island.

    • 2

Take out the bolts extending below the countertop along the front bottom edge of the coil cooktop and the back edge using the nut driver.

    • 3

Slide off the metal retainer bars on the front and back edges. This action disengages the cooktop from the counter or island. Push upward on the bottom of the cooktop to raise it slightly so you can get a grip on one of the edges above.

    • 4

Lift and remove the cooktop while wearing work gloves, pulling the power cord out of the mounting hole.

    • 5

Scrape off the old foam gasket around the surface of the counter or island using a putty knife.

    • 6

Squirt liquid degreasing soap around the rim of the mounting hole and counter surface to remove grease and grime with paper towels until the surface is clean and dry.

    • 7

Peel the protective tape off the back of the new foam gasket that comes with the ceramic cooktop. Press the gasket onto the counter surface around the edge of the mounting hole.

    • 8

Lower the new ceramic cooktop into the mounting hole while wearing work gloves. The cooktop edges should cover the foam gasket on all sides.

    • 9

Secure the cooktop below the counter or island with the bolts and retainer bars, using the nut driver to tighten each bolt.

    • 10

Plug the cooktop power cord into the socket.
