How to Adjust Gas Pressure to a Propane Furnace

Gas furnaces are fed steady supplies of natural or propane gas using a combination of ball valves and stainless steel supply lines. Furnaces are designed to operate under the gas pressure that's normally set by your utility provider. There is no way to change this pressure setting. However, your furnace ball valve must be completely in the "On" position to take full advantage of the gas pressure that's available to the unit. If the ball valve isn't fully open, chances are the furnace won't put out as much heat as it should.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the gas supply line that feeds your furnace. You may need to use a flashlight to search the area around the furnace. Almost all gas lines have a yellow or green cover.

    • 2

Follow the gas line until you find the ball valve. The valve has a small handle that's usually red.

    • 3

Turn the ball valve to the "On" position. You may need to use pliers on older or stuck valves. Turn the valve as far toward the "On" position as possible, or until the valve won't open any farther. Don't force the valve past the "On" position, however.
