How to Change the Outer Glass of a Wall Oven

Glass breaks. It happens often in kitchens when pans drop, doors slam or the sharp temperature difference between a freezer and a hot stove combine on a glass surface. Oven doors are made of tempered glass and stand up to most abuse related to baking and broiling, but that does not make them indestructible. Once you break the glass in your oven door, the oven is useless until you replace the door or the glass.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off power to the stove at the electrical panel. Lay a large towel on a large table or on the floor.

    • 2

Open the oven door all the way. Pull out the hinge locks on the sides of the door and then close the door halfway. Lift the door out of the hinges, using both hands on either side. Set the oven door with the broken glass on the towel.

    • 3

Pull out all the visible broken glass and throw away. Sweep any broken glass off the floor with a broom and dustpan.

    • 4

Unscrew the screws holding the handle in place. Locate the screws on the bottom of the door and remove them. Keep all the screws in a safe and organized place so you can easily reassemble the door after you replace the glass.

    • 5

Lift the inner glass half of the door from the front of the oven door. You should see the inside of the outer glass panel. Pick up any bits of glass remaining on the door.

    • 6

Set the new pane of glass in the outer panel. Place the inner half of the door back over the outer panel. Replace the screws along the bottom of the oven door. Screw the handle back onto the door with the two screws on the inside of the door.

    • 7

Slide the door back into the wall oven at the hinges. Loosen the hinge locks by lifting them and pushing them back into the recess in the wall oven framework. Close the oven door. Turn the power back on to the oven.
