How to Convert a Stove Plug to a Four Prong

Stoves are among the few household appliances that require 220V AC current, rather than the more common 110V. As with electric dryers, there are a variety of 220V plug configurations. Many have only three prongs, possibly leaving you confused when you move into your new house to see a four-pronged oven outlet for your three-pronged range. The solution, however, is quick, simple and doesn't cost a lot of money.

Things You'll Need

  • Small ratchet
  • Wrenches
  • Screwdrivers
  • Four-prong wire or "pigtail"

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the sheet metal access panel on the back of the stove. The panel will be located adjacent to the plug's entry into the back of the unit. Remove the panel by removing the two or more machine screws holding it in place.

    • 2

Remove the bolts holding the three wires to the three wire terminals. Use a ratchet set or a socket with a screwdriver-style socket driver so you can access the nuts head-on. The bolts will not be accessible from the side because they are recessed.

    • 3

Remove the grounding wire. The wire will be attached to machine screw near the three wire terminal. Ground wires are usually green. Typically, a ground wire is the only wire in the vicinity, other than the plug's wires.

    • 4

Remove the cord. Loosen the machine screws that clamp the wire to the back of the oven, allowing it to slide through. Do not completely remove the clamp; it may be reusable with the new four pong wire.

    • 5

Insert the end of the new four-prong cord into the cord clamp. If the connector clamp does not work, use the connector clamp that came with your new cord. Fasten the cord, snugging the machine screws just tight enough to hold the cord in place.

    • 6

Connect the four wires. Connect three of the wires to their corresponding colors on the terminal, fastening each wire with the nuts removed from the terminals. Fasten the fourth ground wire to the ground wire connector. The ground wire connector will be color-coded green. Ground wires can be mounted to any convenient location inside the stove's metal frame, so long as it makes a solid metal-to-metal contact and is located a safe distance from excessive heat.

      Replace the access panel.
