Installation Instructions for a Morton Water Softener

A Morton water softener is manufactured by the same Morton company that manufactures table salt. If your home has hard water, you may notice buildup in your water pipes, showerheads and clothes washers. Installing a Morton water softener helps to reduce the mineral buildup that comes with hard water. The unit comes with most of the supplies necessary for installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off your home's main water supply, and disconnect the power to your hot water heater. Turn on all your water faucets, and leave the faucets on until all of the water is drained from the pipes.

    • 2

Lift off the salt hole cover, and slide the faceplate cover over to provide access to the back valve assembly.

    • 3

Place the unit on a flat surface in a location that has access to the main water supply pipe, the hot water heater and a drain.

    • 4

Rub a dab of silicone grease on the single bypass valve’s O-ring. Once the O-ring is greased, insert the single bypass valve into the unit’s softeners valve. Push them together, and place the holding clips onto each end. Snap the holding clips onto the connection spot to hold the valves together.

    • 5

Use a tape measure to measure from the hot water heater to the outlet port on the water softener, and measure from the main water supply pipe to the inlet port on water softener. Cut and replace piping according to your measurements if the current piping will not fit. Be sure to follow plumbing codes for your local plumbing requirements if you are replacing any piping.

    • 6

Connect the hard water supply pipe to the water softener's inlet valve, and connect the pipe from the hot water heater to the outlet valve on the water softener.

    • 7

Snap wire pipe clamps onto each of the pipes inserted into the water softener to hold them in place.

    • 8

Locate the valve drain elbow on the water softener, and attach one of the rubber hoses that came with the unit. Keep them connected by clamping a hose clamp onto the end. Direct the other end of the rubber hose to the drain. Secure the hose to the drain.

    • 9

Locate the salt storage tank overflow elbow on the water softener, and attach the other rubber hose that came with the unit. Keep them connected by clamping a hose clamp onto the end. Direct the other end of the rubber hose to the drain. Secure the hose to the drain.

    • 10

Turn on at least two cold-water faucets that will operate on softened water. Adjust the single bypass valve on the water softener to operate on the “Bypass” setting, and turn on the main water supply valve. Allow the water to run until there is a steady flow.

    • 11

Slowly adjust the single bypass valve to operate on the “Service” setting. Make the adjustment slowly to allow the water softener tank time to fill up and pressurize. Allow the water to flow for at least three minutes.

    • 12

Turn on a hot water faucet, and allow it to run until there is a steady flow.

    • 13

Turn off both the hot and cold water faucets, and inspect the connections on the water softener for leaks.

    • 14

Pour 3 gallons of water into the salt storage tank. Pour in the Morton System Saver pellets that came with the unit.

    • 15

Lift off the brinewell cover, add 6 tablespoons of bleach into the brinewell, and replace the cover onto the top of the brinewell.

    • 16

Insert the power cord from the water softener into an electrical outlet.

    • 17

Close the faceplate cover and replace the salt hole cover.

    • 18

Push and hold down the “Recharge” button until the display screen reads “Recharge Now,” and release the button.

    • 19

Reconnect the power to your hot water heater.
