How Do I Vent an Island Stove Top?

A properly vented cooktop will help keep your kitchen odor free, regardless of what you are cooking. Vents also remove any grease that is caught in steam or in the air. Canopy vents are installed above the cooktop and use a fan to suck the cooking effluent up away from the cooking surface and push it out of the house through ductwork. A professional HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) person should install the actual ductwork since it does need to vent through the roof of the house. Also, a certified electrician should run the wiring for the vent. A handy homeowner can install the vent itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity that feeds the wiring for the hood. Hold the template that should come with the vent hood over the ductwork coming down through the ceiling. Mark the mounting holes for the hood around the duct opening. Use the nail and hammer to make pilot holes through the ceiling at each mark.

    • 2

Go into the attic and find the pilot holes around the duct. You need to install braces over these holes, which gives the hood something solid to attach to. Measure the distance between the joists and cut two lengths of lumber to these dimensions. Install the lumber pieces over the holes, using at least two wood screws at each end of both pieces. If you are lucky enough that there is a joist already over one of the sets of holes, you need only install one brace.

    • 3

Install the vent hood bracket using the pilot holes you made earlier. Use the screws supplied with the vent hood. Set the bracket to the desired height. Vent hoods need to be set a minimum of 25 inches and a maximum of 30 inches above a cooking surface. Use the level on all planes of the bracket and adjust accordingly.

    • 4

Install the bracket cover. Slide the cover into place over the bracket and fix securely with the provided screws.

    • 5

Lift the hood into place. Connect the hood vent duct to the duct in the ceiling and plug in to the electrical supply. Secure the hood to the bracket.

    • 6

Turn the electricity back on and test the hood.
