How to Install a Trane HVAC Thermostat

The average do-it-yourselfer can install a Trane heating, ventilation and air conditioning thermostat in about 30 minutes with some basic hand tools. When you purchase your new thermostat, you must make sure to choose the right one for your heating and cooling system. Some thermostats have five wires, while others come with four. The design of the digital thermostat allows you to save money on energy bills. You can program the device to adjust the heat or air conditioning up or down at different intervals, potentially saving you a great deal of money on your heating and cooling bill.

  • Flat-tip screwdriver

Instructions

      Turn the power off for the cooling system at the breaker box. Remove the face of the existing thermostat by pulling it off.

      Disconnect the wires from the existing thermostat using a small flat-tip screwdriver. Label the wires using a marker and masking tape. Remove the screws securing the existing thermostat base to the wall using a Phillips screwdriver.

      Connect the wires to the new thermostat according to the labels. Tighten the retaining screws with a small flat-tip screwdriver. Place the base of the new thermostat on the wall and install the retaining screws with the Phillips screwdriver.

      Push the face of the thermostat into the base, making sure it seats firmly in the plug connection. Turn the power on for the heating and cooling system. Program the thermostat according to the instructions for your particular model. Test the thermostat operation in both heating and cooling modes to be sure it operates properly.
