My Heat Pump Won't Cut Off

Turn down the thermostat. It may be set to keep the room warmer than the heat pump can handle without running continually. Once the thermostat is turned down to room temperature, the heat pump should stop blowing heat after a few minutes. If the heat pump still will not turn off, move on to the next step.

Turn the burner off at the thermostat according to your unit's instructions. If the heat pump stops blowing hot air, the heat pump's burner is turned off. This is a sign that your heat pump may have a bad temperature control switch. If the entire unit shuts off, the problem was likely a malfunctioning thermostat. If there is no change in the heat pump in five minutes, move on to the next step.

Manually turn the heat pump off via the main switch on the body of the heat pump, or turn off the circuit breaker that controls the power to the heat pump.

Switch the heat pump's gas shut-off valve to the "off" position to cut off the heat pump's gas supply. The burner should not burn once power to the heat pump's blower is cut.

Call a service technician to diagnose the problem. Any number of problems could be causing your heat pump to fail at any number of points. Tampering with the machine yourself is dangerous and may void your heat pump's warranty.
