Troubleshooting a Well Pressure Switch

If your home uses a water well in lieu of a city water system, you'll need a pump to lift the water out of the well and into your plumbing. A vital component of a well pump is a pressure switch, a device that essentially tells the well pump when to cycle on and off in response to water demands. If you suspect that your well pump pressure switch may be malfunctioning, the issue can typically be resolved in a few basic steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the "points," the small devices that physically open and close the pressure switch, for any corrosion or damage. If these points are corroded or dirty, the pressure switch will fail to start and stop the pump. Clean the points or replace them if they're badly corroded.

    • 2

Check the transfer terminals on the inside of the pressure switch. Another common cause of pressure switch failure occurs when the electrical terminals on the inside of the switch come loose or become damaged. Secure these terminals or replace them if they're badly damaged.

    • 3

Replace the pressure switch if the standard troubleshooting steps don't solve the problem. Pressure switches don't last forever and will eventually need to be replaced when they fail. Install the replacement pressure switch per the manufacturer's instructions and check the new switch to see if it's operational.
