Tips for Priming the Plug on a Hot Tub

The Romans had their famous public baths where its leading citizens could engage in conversation with each other while relaxing in pools of heated water. Modern culture has moved the concept into individual homes where friends and family gather in a hot tub and enjoy its comfort. The hot tub requires proper maintenance.
  1. Changing Water

    • Change the hot tub’s water every two to four months, according to the Spa Depot. Chemicals from daily maintenance, salt from skin and general detritus build up in overwhelming even the best filter. Hot tubs make it easy to drain the water with gravity providing the power. The tubs are drained directly into the home sewer system.

    Priming the Pump

    • After refilling the hot tub, the pump for moving water may not work because air has entered the pump system and is blocking the water flow. The pump must be primed by forcing the air out through the plug. This is easy, but you must first familiarize yourself with the pump components and identify the pieces. Have the manual with you while priming the pump, so that you can identify the parts. Always unplug the spa before working on the pump.

    Older Tubs

    • Older tubs may have an easier system. Look for the filter with a sealed lid near the tub’s top. It might have a plug on the top that allows the air to bleed. Opening the plug and allowing the air to escape should solve the problem. Put the plug back, replug the spa to the electrical system and turn on the high-speed jets. If they work after a moment, then the pump is working properly.

    Newer Tubs

    • Newer tubs are more complicated. Find and identify the gate valves on the discharge and suction sides of the pump. They have a T handle. Close the valve on the discharge side by pushing the handle down. The plug is located on the pump and is identifiable by having a slot for fitting a screwdriver or a raised ridge where pliers attach. Loosen the plug and listen for the air to come out with the water. Keep the water running out until no more air comes with it. Replace the plug, turn on the valve and replug the hot tub. Turn the high-peed jets on until the water is running normally through the pump.
