My Kenmore Oven Stopped Cleaning

Most Kenmore ovens feature a self-cleaning cycle. It uses extremely high temperatures to eliminate or reduce any soils in the oven. At the end of the cycle, you simply wipe away remaining buildup. If the cycle stops before completion, you can troubleshoot it on your own.
  1. Open Oven Door

    • The oven cannot complete its cleaning cycle if its door is open, even slightly. The oven should lock the door at the start of the cleaning cycle, but if the lock is faulty, it may be able to be opened. If this occurs, you must close the oven door completely and leave it closed for the duration of the cleaning cycle.

    Control Settings

    • If the self-cleaning controls were not set properly, it may seem as if the oven stopped cleaning early. The oven also lets you select between a two- and four-hour cycle. You may have inadvertently selected the two-hour, light cleaning when you meant to select the four-hour, heavy cleaning. The length of the cycle is selected with the arrow keys after pressing “Select Clean” on the control panel. If you pressed the “Delay Start” button, the oven may not have even started the cleaning process yet.

    Stop Button

    • If the “Stop” button is pressed during the cleaning cycle, it will interrupt the cycle and stop the cleaning. When this occurs, you cannot restart the cleaning for a period of one hour as the oven cools down. The “Lock” light will remain illuminated until the oven is cool, at which point you can restart the cycle.

    Power Outage

    • If your power went out during the self-cleaning cycle, such as during a storm, the cleaning cycle will be stopped when power returns. If the “Lock” light is on, you cannot restart the cleaning cycle yet. It stays on for a period of one hour when the cleaning cycle is interrupted so the oven can cool. Once the light goes off, you can restart the cleaning cycle.

    Blown Fuse or Tripped Breaker

    • If your home got a power surge, the oven may have stopped cleaning because a household fuse blew or a circuit breaker tripped. Take a look in the breaker box or fuse box, depending on which one your home has, to determine if this has happened. If so, reset the breaker or replace the bad fuse. Once you do this, you can restart the cleaning cycle. If the “Lock” light is on, you will have to wait up to one hour before you can restart the cycle.
