How to Connect a Generator to Your Home's Electrical System in an Emergency

Having a generator to supply power during an emergency can make life more comfortable and bearable during a difficult time. Connecting the generator directly to your home's electrical system will allow you to use power like normal and avoid long extension cords running everywhere, which could cause other hazards. Before an emergency occurs that requires you to hook your generator up to your home's electrical system, hire a certified electrician to install a transfer switch. Do not hook your generator up to your electrical system without a transfer switch, as it can "backfeed" power into the power grid and cause major damage, injury or death.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the main breaker and circuit breakers to the "off" position.

    • 2

Plug the generator cord into the transfer switch or inlet box set up by the electrician.

    • 3

Turn on the generator. Give it a few minutes to warm up.

    • 4

Flip the breaker and circuits you need to power to the generator position. Avoid overloading the generator by only using the circuits you need.
