Troubleshooting a Heil SP80

The Heil SP80 is a fan-assisted combustion gas furnace for residential use. The furnace can be converted to propane gas as well and should function problem-free if kept clean and clear of airflow obstructions near the furnace or the supply and return air vents in the home. Problems may still arise, however, and you can often troubleshoot these issues and find a resolution without having to call Heil for service or inspection.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your Heil furnace switch to “On” if there is no power to the furnace. Reset the circuit breaker if the switch is already positioned to “On” and make sure the main access panel on the furnace is closed completely.

    • 2

Locate the gas valve attached to the furnace and turn it on in a counterclockwise motion if the furnace has power but no pilot light. Stop immediately if you smell gas, disconnect power to the furnace, leave the home and call your gas company. Turn the thermostat down to the lowest point if there is no gas smell then turn the gas knob to “Off.” Wait five minutes so air can clear from the lines then turn the gas knob back to “On” and turn the thermostat to “Heat” and the desired temperature. After 10 minutes of operation, switch the thermostat to “Auto.”

    • 3

Adjust the thermostat to the lowest setting if the pilot light does not ignite after the above procedure is completed. Wait one minute then set the thermostat to a temperature above the current room temperature. Do not repeat this process more than once. Turn off the furnace and contact Heil if the reset process does not get the furnace running.

    • 4

Turn the adjustment screw on the gas valve counterclockwise if the pilot light is too low and the furnace is not operating correctly or turn the screw clockwise to decrease the flame size. Replace the cap on the adjustment screw when finished.

    • 5

Disconnect power to the furnace, remove the filter grille and release the clips that hold the filter in place if the filter is dirty. Wash the filter with warm, soapy water and rinse it off with water. Air-dry the filter then reposition it with the arrows on the filter pointed in the direction of the airflow and close the clips on the filter. Shut the filter grille when you are finished.

Open all of the registers in the home if the furnace is not running hot enough or is running constantly. Check for possible blockages, such as furniture or rugs, and make sure the vent pipe on the furnace is not obstructed.
