How to Remove a Broken Glasstop From an Electric Cooktop

The glass panel on your electric cooktop is strong, able to support the weight of many fully loaded pots and pans. However, the panel is not designed to withstand the force created by dropping a heavy item on it, and it might break or crack in these circumstances. Before installing a new glass panel, you must remove the old one.
  1. Safety Precautions

    • Before performing any repairs to your cooktop, first disconnect the cooktop's power supply. Most often, the cooktop is hardwired to your home's electrical system and is controlled by its own breaker in your home's service panel. When handling any broken glass, wear leather-faced gloves to protect your hands and fingers from cuts.

    Removing the Cooktop

    • Often, the cooktop is held in place by its own weight and is not physically secured to the countertop. Attempt to lift the cooktop up and out of the countertop. If the cooktop does not move, open the cabinets or remove the drawers below and beside the cooktop. If necessary, remove any anchors or screws holding the cooktop into position.

    Removing the Burner Knobs

    • Each burner has its own infinite switch, which controls the level of heat produced by the burner. The knobs are typically located on top of the cooktop, and the infinite switch posts pass through pre-cut holes in the glass. Before removing the glass, you must remove the knobs. The knobs pull straight off the infinite switch posts. If the knobs are difficult to remove, wrap a piece of string or wire around the base of the knob, and then use the string or wire to provide the added leverage needed to remove the knob.

    Removing the Glasstop

    • The glass panel itself is secured to the cooktop by several screws, which are located on the burner box, on the side of the cooktop that is exposed when the cooktop is removed from the counter. Once these screws are removed, lift the glass panel up and off the cooktop.
