How to Remove a Washing Machine Tub Nut

When performing repairs to your washing machine, you may need to remove the tub itself. The tub nut is located below the agitator, securing the tub to the drive block. The tub is secured by a tub nut, which requires a special wrench to remove. The wrench is not the only tool required to remove the tub nut, however, as the nut is very difficult to move without added leverage.
  1. Safety

    • Before disassembling your washing machine, it's imperative to disconnect the appliance's power supply. Disconnect it one of two ways: unplugging the power cord from the wall outlet or turning off the washing machine breaker in your home's main service panel. This step is critical to prevent electric shock.

    Tools Required

    • Several tools are required to remove the tub nut. First, you must remove the agitator, which requires a flat-head screwdriver and socket wrench set. Along with the socket wrench set, you must use a socket wrench extension to reach the agitator bolt. To remove the tub nut, a spanner wrench and hammer are required.

    Remove the Agitator

    • Remove the dispenser from the top of the agitator, if one is installed. On some dispensers, a lock ring on the bottom must be lifted. With the lock ring lifted, wiggle the dispenser off the top of the agitator. Remove the agitator cap with your fingers or a flat-head screwdriver, then remove the agitator bolt at the bottom of the agitator shaft. With the bolt removed, lift the agitator out of the dishwasher.

    Remove the Tub Nut

    • With the agitator removed, the tub nut, which is located on the top of the drive block, is visible. Place the spanner wrench on top of the tub bolt and rotate it until the wrench locks into the nut. Tap the spanner wrench with the hammer to move it counterclockwise and loosen the nut. Continue rotating the tub nut counterclockwise to remove it.
