How to Replace a Magic Chef Glass Cooktop

Magic Chef ranges are available in electric, gas and dual-fuel models, which have an electric stove-top and a gas oven. Electric and dual-fuel models are available with a glass cooktop surface, which covers the burners below. When cooking, the pots and pans are placed directly on the cooktop, as it is designed to withstand the weight of several heavy objects. However, if you accidentally drop a heavy item on the glass, it may crack or break, at which point you must replace it.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the range's power supply by unplugging it or turning off the associated breaker in your home's service panel.

    • 2

Remove any loose glass from the cooktop. When removing the glass, wear leather-faced gloves to prevent cuts to your hands.

    • 3

Open the oven door to access the screws securing the cooktop to the range cabinet. The screws are located on the underside of the front of the cooktop panel and are accessible with the door open. Remove the screws.

    • 4

Lift the cooktop up and secure it using a dowel rod. If possible, have a partner hold the cooktop up for better support.

    • 5

Remove the screws securing the burner braces, which secure the burners, to the underside of the cooktop. Remove the burner braces and burners.

    • 6

Lift the cooktop up and off of the range. Place it face-down on solid surface.

    • 7

Transfer any brackets from the underside of the old cooktop to the new cooktop. Depending on the model of your range, specific brackets may be required to ensure a solid fit of the cooktop. The brackets are secured using screws.

    • 8

Place the new cooktop onto the range cabinet and secure it in an elevated position.

    • 9

Reinstall the burner braces and lower the cooktop. Secure the cooktop to the range cabinet using the screws that were removed.

    • 10

Close the oven door and then restore power to the appliance.
