How to Glue Pellet Stove Vents

Homeowners who enjoy the warmth that wood stoves provide but don’t like chopping wood often switch to pellet stoves. Pellet stoves function almost identically to wood stoves but burn small sawdust pellets instead of logs. As with any wood-burning appliance, proper venting is required to remove smoke and soot from the room. The pellet stove vent runs through an exterior wall where installers glue it with high-temperature caulking, which also waterproofs it and prevents drafts.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the wood stove onto the prepared hearth area and cut a hole in the wall behind it for the vent. The hole must penetrate to the exterior. Cut the hole with a drywall saw or reciprocating saw on the inside of the home. On the outside of the home, use a hole saw or a hammer and chisel if the exterior is brick.

    • 2

Slide the round metal vent pipe through the wall opening and trim off each end flush with the wall surfaces with tin snips.

    • 3

Locate the two pellet stove thimbles, which are square pieces of metal with a round hole in the center. Slice the end off of a tube of high-temperature silicone caulk and place it inside a caulk gun. Turn each thimble over and apply a 1/4-inch bead of silicone caulk around the perimeter to act as the glue. Position the caulk 1/2-inch from the edge of the thimble.

    • 4

Insert one thimble on the interior side of the hole and the other on the exterior side of the hole. Press each against the wall to glue it firmly in place. Secure each thimble with the provided screws and tighten them fully into each corner of the metal.

    • 5

Apply another bead of caulk around the outer edge of the installed thimbles to prevent air leaks and to further glue it to the wall. Run your finger around the caulk bead, after application, to smooth it then wipe off the excess caulk.

    • 6

Pick up the vent hood that caps off the exterior pipe. Apply another 1/4-inch-wide bead of high-temperature caulk around the rim of the pipe in the wall and slide the vent cap onto it as far as possible.
