Amana SSE 110 Troubleshooting

The Amana SSE is a gas furnace that can be installed in the home. Like other furnaces, the Amana SSE functions via a system of internal components, such as the pilot light, heat sensor and burners. If a problem arises with one of these components then the whole unit could be at risk. There are quick ways to troubleshoot your Amana furnace so you can find out exactly what the problem is.

Locate the breaker box in your home and open it. Locate the breaker that connects to the furnace circuit and flip it to the "Off" position. Flip the breaker back on. If the circuit was tripped, this resetting of the breaker could get your furnace working again. If this isn't the problem, leave the breaker off and proceed to the next step.

    • 2

Slide the bottom compartment of the furnace out and you will have access to the air filter. Slide the air filter out of the unit and inspect it. If dirt is caked on to the point you can't see through the filter, it is time to replace the filter. Like an air filter for an automobile, these components are inexpensive. If the problem isn't with the air filter, proceed to the next step.

    • 3

Slide the top panel off the furnace and inspect the pilot light. The pilot flame should be yellow. You can adjust the pilot flame by turning the single screw on the pilot assembly left or right. Turn it right to increase the flame and turn it left to decrease the flame. Increasing will turn the flame more yellow and decreasing will turn it more blue. If there is no flame, the pilot could be defective and will need to be removed and replaced by a professional.

Inspect the heat sensor. This is the metal rod next to the pilot light. Its function is to detect the pilot flame. If it can't detect the flame, it shuts off the gas valves and your furnace won't start. The sensor being dirty is a common reason for it not to function properly. Clean off the dirt and soot with steel wool.

Inspect the igniter. This is the metal fork-shaped component next to the pilot assembly. If the metal portion of the igniter is cracked or damaged, it can't heat up, and it won't light the burners of the furnace. If the igniter is damaged, have a professional replace it.
