Twist the knob on the gas tank clockwise until tight and turn all knobs on the Kenmore grill to the "Off" position. Wait for the grill to cool if it has been in use.
Remove the cooking grates and ceramic briquettes or lava rocks underneath while wearing work gloves to protect your hands and keep them clean. Take out the support grate over the burner.
Unscrew the nut on the ignitor push-button assembly from the back of the control panel. Remove the washer and C-clip underneath.
Grip the connector on the end of the wire below the grill where the wire attaches to the electrode on the ignitor, using needle nose pliers. Pull off the wire.
Pull the push-button assembly out of the front of the control panel and remove the wire attached to it.
Unscrew and remove the nut holding the ignitor to the bottom of the Kenmore. Pull out the old ignitor from the top, inside the grill.
Insert the new ignitor with the contact tip facing downward into the hole inside the Kenmore. Secure the ignitor to the underside of the grill with the washer and nut supplied with the new part. Tighten with pliers.
Install the new push-button assembly through the mounting hole on the front of the control panel. Insert the wire on the button first, then slide the push-button into place. Secure the button to the back of the control panel with the supplied hardware and tighten with pliers.
Slide the electrical connector on the end of the wire onto the ignitor's contact tip on the underside of the grill.
Replace the support grate, lava rocks or briquettes and cooking grates inside the Kenmore. Arrange the rocks or briquettes in an even layer across the support grate for optimal heat distribution.
