How to Clean the Catalytic Combustor on My Defiant Wood Stove

Defiant wood burning stoves have been around since 1975. Each Defiant wood burning stove contains a catalytic combustor, whether you choose to operate the stove using it or not. If you do use it, Defiant recommends that you clean the catalytic combustor regularly to ensure its long life. Cleaning the catalytic combustor should only take a few minutes and will ensure that the stove operates at its best potential.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull out the access door and the inner fireback from the back wall of the interior of the stove. The pieces will lift out. The access door will be removed first; it is a flat panel with a hole in the center. The inner fireback is a flat panel with slanted sides and a ridge line down the center.

    • 2

Lift up the catalytic combustor and slide it out of the stove. Once you remove the access door and inner fireback, you will see the catalytic combustor; it looks like a screen with honeycomb screening.

    • 3

      Bring the catalytic combustor outside.

    • 4

Use your mouth to blow gently on the catalytic combustor. Blow off any dust or debris from the honeycomb screen. You may gently wave the catalytic combustor to allow air to flow through it to remove any dust or debris that you cannot blow off. Defiant recommends that you do not spray the catalytic combustor with compressed air.

    • 5

Vacuum all areas inside of the stove to remove all ash.

    • 6

Slide the catalytic combustor, inner fireback and access door back into place.
