How to Fix a Cracked Smooth-Top Range

Smooth-top ranges have a glass or ceramic surface on which you place pots and pans. The surface is very strong, and able to support the weight of several heavy objects. However, dropping an item on the surface may cause the top to break or crack. You can't use the range until the stove top panel is replaced, or you risk further damage to the range and possible injury.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the range from the wall outlet, or turn off the breaker in your home's service panel to disconnect the range's power source.

    • 2

Open the oven door and locate the screws under the front of the main top. Depending on your range, there are two to four hex, Phillips or Torx screws. Remove the screws.

    • 3

Close the oven door, and then lift the main top. Have a helper hold the main top up so you are able to remove the burners. If you don't have a helper, place a sturdy object or dowel rod below the top to secure it.

    • 4

Remove the screws securing the burner braces or the burners themselves, depending on your range model, and remove the burners.

    • 5

Lift the main top up and off of the range.

    • 6

Look at the bottom of the old main top for any brackets that are not installed on the new top. Transfer the brackets from the old top to the new top, if applicable.

    • 7

Place the new top on the range, and secure the burners to the underside.

    • 8

Lower the top, and then secure it to the range using the screws that were removed.

    • 9

Restore power to the range to complete the replacement of the top.
