Discharging the Pressure of an Oil Furnace

All modern furnaces are equipped with a pressure release valve. This valve is designed to automatically release the pressure inside the furnace when the pressure or water temperature rises above the furnace's capacity. When your furnace is working normally, the temperature and pressure will not rise above manageable levels, and the pressure release valve will not release steam or water. Furnace manufacturers recommend testing your pressure release valve once annually to make sure that the infrequently used valve still works. Too much pressure buildup in your furnace is a dangerous and potentially expensive problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the valve and hold it in the up position for three seconds. Listen for the sound of a strong stream of water releasing into the overflow pipe.

    • 2

Release the valve while it is in the up position. A well-functioning valve will snap back into place soundly. If it does not, repeat steps 1 and 2 to clear any mineral buildup that may prevent the release valve from operating optimally.

    • 3

Turn off the furnace if the pressure release valve will not close, leaks water or if the furnace is otherwise malfunctioning. Call a service technician as soon as possible. Well-functioning valves may be left alone until next year.
