How to Maintain an HB Smith Boiler G200

Routine Maintenance

  Examine the boiler for damaged or rusted parts before each heating season. Check the smoke pipe, draft diverter and all joints. Clean any soot accumulation and replace any damaged parts.

  Take off the draft diverter and jacket top panel. Illuminate the flue with a flashlight and check for soot accumulations or any other obstructions. If you see soot, remove the burner access panel and lift up the burners. Remove the flueway baffles. Remove the soot with a long-handle flue brush.

  Clean the burners with the flue brush and a can of compressed air. Replace the burner assembly, lining up the burner holes with the orifices. The burner ports should face up.

Clean the Boiler

  Close all of the gate valves and turn on the boiler. Wait for the pressure to reach about 3 psi, then turn off the boiler. Wait for the pressure to drop to 0 psi. Take off the pressure relief valve.

  Pour caustic soda through the opening where the pressure relief valve was. Add 1 pound for every 1,000 square feet of radiation capacity.

  Attach the vent piping to the valve opening and place the other end in a drain.

  Turn on the manual fill valve until you see water discharging from the pipe. Turn on the boiler and wait until you see steam and water discharging from the pipe. Wait for about one to three hours, until only steam discharges from the pipe.

  Turn off the boiler. Open the boiler drain to drain the remaining water. Refill the boiler with warm water until you see water discharging from the vent piping.

  Drain the boiler again by opening the boiler drain. Refill the boiler. Remove the vent piping and replace the pressure relief valve. Open all the gate valves and turn the boiler on.
