Symtec Grip Heater Installation

Symtec heated grips feature a temperature control that can be adjusted to control the amount of heat produced by your grips, and LED lighting so that the controls are visible both day and night. The temperature control also switches off automatically after two hours to prevent draining of power from your battery. Because Symtec heated grips consist of a few basic parts and simple wiring, installation is possible without hiring a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the existing grips from the handles and clean away any adhesive residue remaining on the handlebars.

    • 2

Spray the handlebars and inside the left grip, which is the one without the wires attached, with three coats of WD-40. Wait two minutes between coats.

    • 3

Position the left grip so that the cord is pointing straight out to the left. Push the grip until it is fully covering the bar.

    • 4

Apply three coats of WD-40 to the right handlebar and inside the right grip. Position the right grip so that the cord points straight out to the right. Slip the end over the handlebar and push the grip fully on the handlebar.

    • 5

Remove the paper from the thumb warmer and place it, adhesive side down, on the thumb side of the throttle.

    • 6

Slip the heat-shrink tubing over the thumb warmer and throttle. Use a heat gun to shrink the tubing once it is in place.

    • 7

Push the throttle into full position and secure the wires from the right grip to the throttle, using cable ties.

    • 8

Wrap a layer of electrical tape around the handlebar at the desired mounting location and slide the handlebar mount over the tape. Insert a screw through the bottom of the mount and tighten a nut lightly over the end, using an adjustable wrench.

    • 9

Attach the pivot, which is a square-bottomed piece with a slotted curved top, to the mount, and secure with one of the screws and lock washers provided. Slide a nut over the end of the screw and tighten lightly.

    • 10

Insert the tab on the bottom of the temperature controller into the slot on the top of the pivot. Slide a screw into the holes to hold it in place.

    • 11

Turn the mount assembly to a point that enables you to view the controller when driving. Tighten the screw and nut at the bottom of the handlebar mount with an adjustable wrench.

    • 12

Remove the controller and tighten the screw and nut at the base of the pivot where it attaches to the mount.

    • 13

Insert a lock washer into the slot on top of the pivot and reattach the controller. Secure with a screw and tighten a nut over the end. Make sure all fasteners are tightened so that the mounting assembly does not move.

    • 14

Attach the six-pin female connector on the grips and the thumb warmer to the male connector on the temperature controller.

    • 15

Place a 12-volt power supply wire from your ATV into the open channel of the red tap connector. Insert the red wire from the grip heaters into the channel next to this. Symtec recommends using the accessory plug or the hot wire to the headlight switch for the power supply for this connection.

    • 16

Squeeze the metal contact, using pliers, until it is flush with the top of the connector, then close the cover.

    • 17

Connect the black wire to a ground such as the frame or a ground wire. Rubber-coated components such as handlebars are not good grounds.
