How to Install an Air Conditioner Special Trap

Water waste -- such as condensation from warm air that cools around the coils of an air conditioner -- can collect in the unit's drain pipe. The condensation can then build up and affect the appliance's output in your home. Condensation build-up can be reduced by using a special trap that connects directly to the drain pipe, called a condensate line trap. This trap helps to prevent air from moving back into the air conditioner due to the curvature of the PVC pipe that the trap uses.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Masking tape
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Two PVC connectors
  • PVC glue

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electrical power to your air conditioner unit at your home circuit breaker.

    • 2

Locate the drain pipe connected to the air conditioner, which is typically a thin white pipe at the bottom of the unit.

    • 3

Measure the size of the new condensate line trap drain pipe to determine how much of the original drain pipe you need to cut.

    • 4

Mark the length you need to cut off on the drain pipe using masking tape.

    • 5

Cut both markings using a reciprocating saw. Make sure to wear protective eye gear when making the cuts.

    • 6

Apply 1/4 inch of PVC glue to one end of a PVC connector, then firmly press the glued end to one of the cut portions of the drain pipe.

    • 7

Apply 1/4 inch of PVC glue to another PVC connector, then firmly press the glued end to the condensate line trap.

    • 8

Connect the condensate line trap to the drain pipe to make sure it fits properly. Take the trap off again, and apply PVC glue to both connectors.

    • 9

Reconnect the condensate line trap to the drain pipe, and allow at least 30 seconds to pass while holding the trap to the pipe.

    • 10

Turn the electrical power back on to the air conditioner from your home circuit breaker.
