How to Adjust the Furnace Water Pump Pressure Gauge

There are several reasons why your furnace water pressure may need to be adjusted, such as rapid or repeated water pump cycling, low water pressure or other water pressure issues. Adjusting the water pressure gauge may solve these problems but note that other troubleshooting efforts, such as changing the filter or cleaning the pump, may also be necessary. Note that only adults familiar with operating the furnace and high pressure devices should attempt to adjust the water pressure gauge.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the furnace power and allow the furnace to cool completely prior to adjusting the water pressure.

    • 2

Locate the furnace water pump, usually on the side or rear of the unit.

    • 3

Find the two springs on the pump pressure switch, one of which is larger than the other.

    • 4

Adjust the nut on the larger spring counterclockwise a quarter turn using an adjustable wrench to lower the pump operating pressure.

    • 5

Rotate the nut on the larger spring clockwise a quarter turn to raise the pump operating pressure.

    • 6

Restore power and allow the furnace to cycle through a couple of heating cycles to determine if the adjustment resolves the problem. Repeat as needed making quarter turns at a time until the desired pressure is reached.
