DIY Water Generator

As anyone who's ever suffered through a hot, sunny, humid day can tell you, moisture will condense on the side of a glass of cool liquid, even if it's under an umbrella. If you want to build your own water generator, the most accessible power source you can use is the sun, and the largest source of moisture is the atmosphere. All you have to do is make sure there's a dark surface on which that moisture may condense and make sure that surface is exposed to the sun's heat as much as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk around the side of your home that has the most exposure to the sun while holding a compass so that "East" is in line with your direction of travel. Stop when the compass needle, which always points to North, is at a right angle -- 90 degrees -- to the direction you are moving.

    • 2

Drive four 24-inch-long wooden stakes into the ground in the form of a square that's about 24 inches long on each side. Stretch two corners of a black, plastic trash bag between two adjacent stakes and staple those two corners to the top of the two stakes. Stretch the trash bag to the other two stakes so that the center of the bag is about 2 inches lower than the edges of the bag. Staple the bag to the top of the stakes.

    • 3

Place a rock in the center of the plastic trash bag. Place a clean, empty jar under the trash bag so the mouth of the jar is centered beneath the center of the trash bag that is drooping under the weight of the rock.

    • 4

Wait for the sun to heat the top side of the black plastic bag. The heat will cause moisture to condense out of the atmosphere onto the cooler underside of the bag, where it will run down to the weighted center of the bag and drip into the jar.

    • 5

Remove the jar when it fills with water and replace it with an empty jar.
