How to Drill Draft Holes Into an Ash Door on My Wood Burning Stove

The ash door on a wood stove is located at the bottom of the firebox. It’s where the stove’s ashes fall when they are burned. The ash door also has air holes in it that allow the draft from your flue to flow under the wood in your stove, which makes your fire hotter. If your ash door only has one hole in it, you can drill a second hole to produce a better draft in your stove.

Things You'll Need

  • Goggles

Instructions

    • 1

Open your wood stove and locate the ash door at the bottom of the firebox.

    • 2

Fill the cup with cold water.

    • 3

Put on the goggles and find the draft hole in your ash door. Place the other hole on the opposite side of the door as the first hole.

    • 4

Place the diamond drill bit onto your drill and turn it on. Press the drill into the ash door. Pour a little cold water onto the door if the drill is having trouble getting through. Stop the drill if it starts overheating at any point. Push the drill into the door until you have a 1-inch hole in the ash door.
