Unplug the drilling machine power cord.
Hold a piece of the material to be drilled on the top of the slotted drilling machine table. There must be enough clearance between the table and spindle for the spindle to rise completely clear of the wood or other material.
Loosen the knob or twist handle on the back of the table counterclockwise where it attaches to the back of the vertical frame of the drilling machine. Raise or lower the table as necessary to hold the thickness of the material you plan to drill.
Insert a drill bit into the chuck on the tip of the drilling machine spindle, and tighten it with the chuck key that comes with the drill. The chuck is the socket on the end of the spindle that holds the drill bit securely.
Push up on the lever to the right of the drilling machine as you face the equipment. The spindle at its highest position must hold the drill bit above the material you are drilling in order to operate properly. If the bit does not clear the material with the spindle at its highest position, lower the slotted table by loosening the clamp and readjusting the table position.
Plug in the drilling machine's power cord.
