How to Install a Start Relay Overload Protector on a Kenmore Freezer

The start relay overload protector on a Kenmore freezer allows the unit to pull in large amounts of power, such as when the compressor kicks on, without blowing out a circuit. Installing a start relay overload protector on a Kenmore freezer allows your appliance to operate efficiently and safely. As with any other kind of electrical project, use caution when performing this operation.

Things You'll Need

  • Start relay overload
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • 150K Ohm resistor
  • 4 alligator clips
  • 2 10-inch lengths of wire

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Kenmore freezer, and move it so you can access the rear of the appliance.

    • 2

Remove the rear access panel of the freezer with a screwdriver or hex head screwdriver as needed.

    • 3

Mount the new relay overload protector in the space on the freezer chassis. In general, the relays are placed on the freezer chassis near the compressor motor. Check the manual for your specific Kenmore freezer model. Relay protectors are typically 2 by 3 inches and rectangular or square in size. It may either clip into the chassis or be secured by screws.

Discharge the capacitor before touching the terminals. Connect two lengths of wire to alligator clips at each end. Clamp the alligator clip at each end of the wires to either side of a 150K Ohm resistor. Attach the free alligator clips at the end of the wires to the capacitor terminals and wait approximately 30 seconds. Disconnect the clips and set aside.

    • 5

Connect the wires from the capacitor to the two main start relay terminals. The wires may wrap around screw type terminals or may need to be inserted into the terminal opening. In either case, use a pair of wire strippers to remove the last half-inch or so of wiring from the capacitor wires if it isn't removed already.

Connect the condenser fan motor to the relay. Connect one of the fan motor terminal wires to the third terminal on the start relay. This terminal typically is set off from the first two terminals. Connect the second terminal wire from the fan motor to the first terminal on the relay.

Plug in the Kenmore freezer to verify that the compressor starts and the unit begins cooling. If it doesn't, unplug it and check your wire connections. When the freezer is running properly, replace the service panel and secure with the screws.
