How to Install the Switch on a Hampton Bay Veranda

The Hampton Bay Veranda is an electric ceiling fan controlled by a remote wall unit. The wall unit, or switch, is wired into the household electrical circuit in a manner similar to a standard light switch. Installing the ceiling fan switch supplied with the Veranda model involves removing the existing wall switch. The installation takes less than an hour using common tools. Additional wiring supplies are available at hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker that controls the existing wall switch in the room with the Veranda ceiling fan.

    • 2

Remove the two screws holding the light switch cover plate to the wall, using a screwdriver. Take off the plate.

    • 3

Remove the two screws holding the switch to the junction box at the top and bottom. Pull the switch forward.

    • 4

Loosen the switch screws to remove the three wires. Take out the old wall switch.

    • 5

Match the wire colors on the back of the Veranda wall switch unit to the wires in the junction box. Remove 1/4-inch of insulation from the end of each wire using the wire strippers.

    • 6

Twist the bare ends together on each matching pair of wires. For example, the green wire on the Veranda wall switch unit twists together in a splice with the green ground wire in the wall junction.

    • 7

Place a wire connector on each pair of spliced wires and turn clockwise. Wire connectors are small cones with a shape similar to a sewing thimble.

    • 8

Push the connected wires carefully into the junction box and secure the Veranda wall switch with screws into the junction box.

    • 9

Place the Veranda wall switch cover plate over the switch assembly and secure with screws. The cover plate lines up over the buttons on the wall switch. The buttons fit through the holes in the cover plate.

    • 10

Turn the circuit breaker back on.
