A.O. Smith Electric Tank Float Switch Failure

A.O. Smith electric water heaters are available in commercial and residential models and offer a patented system to help protect the tank against mineral scale buildup. The water heaters come in different sizes and require a standard 240 volts with an input of 4.5 volts. If the float switch on the electric tank is not working and the water heater is automatically shutting down or is leaking, some troubleshooting may restore proper function without the need to call for a professional repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect power to the water heater by unplugging the power cord then wait for the heater to cool down.

    • 2

Locate and open the upper panel on the electric water heater.

    • 3

Press the high limit reset switch on the control panel to restart the water heater.

    • 4

Restore power by plugging the power cord back in and allow the water heater to fill. Then turn the water heater off again.

    • 5

Attach a hose to the drain valve and connect the other end to a large bucket or to a drain that runs outdoors.

    • 6

Open the water heater drain valve then open a hot water faucet at a nearby sink. Allow all of the water to drain out of the water heater or until the water runs clear. Push up on the pressure relief valve located on the top of the water heater. Water will drain out of the overflow pipe. Once the water stops flowing out of the pipe, close the pressure relief valve.

    • 7

Shut the drain valve and the water faucet. Allow the water heater to refill prior to restoring power to the water heater.
